Community action at UBD - electricity consume by UBD communities on the 14th September 2009

For week7, we were told to make a survey how the electricity is consumed by UBD communities. We are concerning on lights and air conditioning are being used by the communities. Whether its bad or good consuming. For doing this, we were set into partner with the location given. As for my task, i was partner with Hafizah binti Saidi. The survey location taken place at Chancellor Hall UBD. Both of us dividing the job among ourself, one person taking notes about the lights and air conditioner on or off. Then the other taking pictures as our evidence to prove how the lights and air conditoning are being used.

This conservation survey activity actually idea come from the previous activity, a documentary movie called HOME.This movie open our eyes to protect the environment from the negative environmental effect such as green house effect. Thus effect to climatic changes to the weather locally as well as globally, global warming.

The question is that why this greenhouse effect is becoming a big issue to the public. By giving a definition, greenhouse effect is usually like a blanket to the atmosphere. The heat is trap at the atmosphere due to absorb of gases and emitt of the infared radiation. The more these gases are released, the more heat is trap to the atmosphere. Therefore, the weather becomes more hot and reduces the occurence of rain. These gases are water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and CFCs. Real climate ranks by their contribution to the greenhouse effect are:

  • water vapour, which contributes - 36-70%
  • carbon dioxide, which contributes - 9-26%

  • methane, which contributes - 4-9%

  • Ozone, which contributes - 3-7%

[ranks above reference from wikipedia, the free encyclopedia]

In addition, the uses of electricity also one of the usage that can contribute to greenhouse effect. By which the resources are well-known from fossil fuels and nuclear power. which its purposes are use to generate the electricity. Fossil fuels and nuclear power produce carbon dioxide. Consumed too much, may lead these energy to produce more quantity of carbon dioxide therefore more heat is trapped. moreover, its also bring many health problem such as difficulties in breathing and effect to the circulation of blood.

during the day, We discovered all over the place, starting from first floor to the basement level.

  • As for my evidence of findings, pictures and some description below shows what both us have done during the survey going on.
both above pictures shows and make an alert to UBD communities to save electricity and switch off the airconditioner while you are not using. What we have found that, not all the places at the Chancellor Hall have post this notice. Its just only certain places you can find it.

GROUND FLOOR
A few pictures below shows how the uses of light and airconditioner are being used at the ground floor. There are too much lights are switched on. mostly are at the main hall of the Chancellor UBD. Its like whole area are being shine by the lights execpt for the stage. Then again, at the main entrance, the door was opened but the airconditioner that prevent the air out from the door was switch on. Its shows that they are wasting the electricity.

this VIP Room was our 1st survey. Its good to find that they follow the notice post. They switch off the lights and airconditioner when the place empty.

The picture of Main Hall shows whole lights are switch on even there is nobody is inside. This shows the bad use by the UBD communites.they just let the lights switch on and waste the energy As well as the uses of airconditioner.

This picture shows, its only a few lights are switch on during the student was studying. only necessary part are switch on. This gives good effect by the UBD communties, they reduces the use of energy.

FIRST FLOOR

it was a little bit frustrated because some of the places were locked. But the interesting part was that, we used our feet to feel whether the airconditioner is switch on or not. and yet yes the airconditioner was switch on. another waste of electricity was going on. even from the smell of the carpet we know already that its been long time the airconditioner are switch on.

The picture give us notice about the wasting of the electricity. They switch on the light and they open the curtain.Actually what exactly the purpose they doing that?.they know that its day time and its bright outside.why dont they use the light from the sun instead of switching the lights on?its show the bad use of electricity.

the bad use of airconditioner.they let the window open while the airconditioner was switch on and noboby was there.

LOWER GROUND

for this floor, same situation was going on. still again there were good and bad uses of electricity. the waste of energy use.And pictures were below.

Hafizah was pointing to show the classroom with no student, the lights was off as well as the airconditioner. by contrast, the next classroom which not been used by the student but the lights were on and high temperature of airconditioner were switch on as well.

From this activity, i have learn something important which is working as teamwork. Then the dangerous of waste energy which can contribute to green house effect. The use of airconditioner may lead to unfriendly use, which the gas (CFCs) produces free radical to the ozone layer. Then soon may depleted the ozone layer. Causes the UV radiation can pass through the surface. Then in term of economic factor, the waste of electricity may cause highly paid on bill. What I feel about the survey we studied, mostly the place at Chancellor Hall were more into bad uses; waste energy or electricity than the good uses. Its possiblities, if they are not take action, later the climate of Brunei may change. Greenhouse effect might possible can happen. Then also i have learn about the formation of algae around the walls.which if the airconditioner tends to switch on all day long, its damp the wall then make the algae to produce more.

picture shows the algae live on the wall and reproduce by presence of water.

To conclude all, there are a few steps to reduce the consuming of energy and electricity

  • kept the temperature of airconditioner in minimum range of temperature.
  • instead by using fossil fuels or nuclear power to generate electricity, using solar power from sun can contribute to generate electricity and this method is free pollution.
  • Building Dam or hydro-electric power from running of water can also generate electricity.
  • switch off the light if you are not using it.
  • instead switch on all light, it good if just we switch on small amount of light.
  • conserve electricity if your are not using it.

'Home' Documentary Movie on the 7th September 2009

Home, the title of the movie was given. This documentary type of movie was inspired by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. It was released on the 5th June 2009.This movie is not just like ordinary movie what we have saw. Yet It gave us motivated, think big and wise decision. such how we as human being should care as much as possible and make use of what earth given to us. Then how man kind interface the cycle life of the earth and link between them.

From my understanding, earth at first like no other than dust and thermendous heat from core of the earth. which cause of natural behaviour interuption called volcanic eruption.these activity given out the vast amount of gases and carbons to the atmosphere. The equal balance of water cycle gives enough amount of water to the earth and stored 98% in liquid form and 2% in ice form.

Now, this began how human interact with the earth. How human change the face of the earth. what human have done to the earth without their notice. evenmore human destroys the cycle of environment. Some human activities are, agriculture, uses of non- renewable resources especially oil and natural gas, drilling, irigration, mining and deforestration. These activities leads to environmental problems locally and globally.

Nowadays, Earth is suffering from global warming. This happens due to the cutting down of wide areas of the forest in order for the purpose of agriculture, construction and buildings of infrustructure. Trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen to the atmosphere, clearing the forest will lead to an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and a reduction of oxygen in the atmosphere. Thus, the carbon dioxide forms a layer in the atmosphere and traps heat within the atmosphere causing the environment to be warmer. This heat can cause the melting of ice caps in the north and south poles which may leads to the rise of sea-level. The most affected areas area people who are live in the coastal areas and low-lying areas. Examples bangladesh, around the delta is most effected. Bangladesh consider as one of the poorer countries in the world.

Non- renewable resources are non-biodegrable, thus cause a rise in pollution. arise in the number of cars, uses of toxic chemical in the agriculture activity and burning of coals causes an increase in the harmful pollutant produce to the atmosphere called air pollution. This type of pollution leads to the pollution of the water. As aresult, it effect to basic needs of human which is water as their drinking water.

In term of economic growth, poor people become more poor then rich people becoming more riches. This is due to uneven distribution of the country and the rich countries more focus on the military weapon rather than giving aid and help the poor countries to develope.

All in all, this movie open our eyes and think again how the earth suffer by the man-kind without they realising. In order to survive,we know that, to stop human from distrupting the earth is impossible. But by saving earth from being destroy possibilty one of good idea. This have been proven by developed countries that they now starting to use renewable resource to have energy. Examples solar power direclty from sun, geothermal from underground heat use to generate heat and windfarm to produce electricity rather than use fossil fuels to get energy to produce electricity. Then some countries start to conserve large-scale of forest area to balance out the environment. And also they reduce the number of cutting trees every year.

what i have learn from this movie, i can feel the effect of climatic change that already happened in Brunei like the weather is getting hotter and hotter due to global warming. Apart from that, less rain have been fall in Brunei due to more forest cutting down for the development. The air have been polluted by the increasing number of car users . Resulting from the emission of carbon dioxide of the car fumes.
